Computer-Assisted Guidance for Dental Office Tobacco-Cessation Counseling: A Randomized Controlled

This study examined whether provision of computer-assisted guidance in an electronic patient record (EPR) would increase the likelihood dentists and dental hygienists would assess interest in quitting, deliver a brief tobacco intervention, and refer to a tobacco cessation quitline as compared to a group providing usual care. Clinics were randomized to receive the computer-assisted guidance through EPR or provide usual care. Patients were surveyed by telephone (response rate 72%). Results based on patient report showed that providers receiving the computer-assisted guidance performed all of the intended activities more frequently than the control group (assess interest in quitting 87% vs. 70%, p=0.0006; discuss specific strategies for quitting (47% vs. 26%, p=0.003; refer to a quitline 37% vs. 17%, p=0.007). The authors conclude that clinical decision support embedded in electronic health records can effectively help providers deliver tobacco interventions.
