NAQC to Partner with the University of South Carolina for “QuitConnect: A National Smoker’s Registry

Friday, October 11, 2013
Posted by: Natalia Gromov
NAQC is a sub-contractor to the University of South Carolina on a Special Interest Project funded by the CDC to identify potential challenges and solutions to establishing a national quitline registry for identifying and re-engaging smokers in quitlines. While a national quitline registry would increase the reach and impact of smoking cessation counseling, it will also be critical to identify an approach to such a project that addresses as many questions and concerns of the quitline community as possible. The project has been selected to be funded, and we are in the process of convening a workgroup of quitline stakeholder representatives to provide guidance, feedback, and the quitline community "voice” throughout all phases of the project.Phase one of the project consists of conducting focus groups with quitline stakeholders. Findings will be summarized, and a report written highlighting the potential barriers and facilitators to having quitlines participate in a national registry. Findings will be used in Phase 2 of the project for the design of a data platform for a national registry, and in Phase 3: a pilot project to test the feasibility of the prototype data platform. The proposed pilot data from this research would identify whether such a data platform is feasible for re-engaging smokers in quitline services, and would also evaluate the most effective methods for initiating follow-up with quitline callers. Results will be used to scale up the registry to a national level. NAQC member participation through the workgroup will ensure that the final registry (assuming its creation and operation are feasible) will incorporate the feedback from, and address the concerns of, all types of quitline stakeholders.
