Highlights from the Board’s October Meeting!
The Board met in Phoenix on October 9-10 for its first meeting of the new fiscal year. Attendees included:
  • Newly elected officers: Tracey Strader, Chair, Oklahoma TSET; Chad Morris, Vice Chair, University of Colorado; Diane Canova, Secretary, Legacy; and Amy Lukowski, Treasurer, National Jewish Health;
  • Newly elected director:  Barbara Schillo, ClearWay MN; and
  • Continuing directors: Chris Anderson, California Smokers Helpline (serving as this year’s Executive Committee Member-at-Large); Sharon Campbell, University of Waterloo; Jeannette Noltenius, consultant; and Wayne Tormala, AZ Department of Health Services (immediate past Chair).
The Board discussed and took action on a host of important business items, including financial and fundraising reports, the annual review of financial statements and 990 (tax) form, and establishing a new nomination committee. However the topic that truly engaged the Board both in terms of passion and dedication of time was a discussion on developing performance measures for NAQC as an organization. Dave Nakashima facilitated this session for the Board and we thank him for his exceptional work!
Developing Performance Measures for NAQC!
Members were at the forefront of our thinking as the Board considered what outcomes NAQC should achieve and discussed the importance of ensuring that  members and the field will benefit from these achievements.  We reflected on NAQC’s recent report on the Future of QuitlinesCDC’s recent Best Practices update,  and input staff and directors have heard from you regarding priorities, challenges and emerging issues.  Be assured that we understand the importance of NAQC’s work to the membership and plan to strengthen the organization as it moves forward.  NAQC supports the field through its superb -
  • Technical assistance and training;
  • Collection, analysis and dissemination of data on quitlines and cessation;
  • Establishment of recommendations and standards for improving the quality of quitlines and cessation;
  • Advocacy for the sustainability of quitlines and other important issues;
  • Translation of research and advancement of innovations; and
  • Developing partnerships that move quitlines forward.
To follow up on developing performance measures, the Board established an Ad Hoc Group, chaired by Chad Morris. The Ad Hoc Group will report on its progress at the January Board meeting. We hope to have final performance measures developed by the spring of 2015. As this process moves forward, we may ask for formal feedback from members. Please feel free to share your ideas and hopes with the Board at any time.
If you have questions about the Board or this report, please contact Board ChairTracey Strader at or NAQC President and CEOLinda Bailey at
