NAQC is excited to host a call to action, How Quitlines Can Address the Needs of the Behavioral Health Population, on February 28 from 2:00 pm ET to 3:30 pm ET. In October 2016, the American Cancer Society’s Center for Tobacco Control and the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center at the University of California, San Francisco, co-hosted a national summit to address the extremely high prevalence of tobacco use among people with mental illnesses and addictions. The summit produced a national action plan offering practical strategies that promise to significantly increase tobacco use prevention, increase cessation and quit attempts, and ultimately reduce the tobacco use prevalence among the behavioral health population. This webinar will provide an overview of the national data and current behavioral health landscape along with highlights from the Behavioral Health Summit and an overview of the action plan and Call-to-Action will be presented by Cliff Douglas, Director for the Center for Tobacco Control at the American Cancer Society and Catherine Saucedo, Deputy Director, Smoking Cessation Leadership Center. Robert Vargas, Optum and Amy Lukowski, National Jewish Health will discuss initiatives their organizations have undertaken to address the needs of the behavioral health population.
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
1. Explain the magnitude of the tobacco use problem in behavioral health populations.
2. Articulate strategies for reducing the burden from smoking among persons with mental illness and substance use disorders outlined in the National Behavioral Health Summit for Tobacco–Free Recovery Action Plan.
3. Identify successful initiatives to help address the tobacco cessation needs of behavioral health populations.
