Dr. Shu-Hong Zhu who runs the CA Smokers' Helpline currently has a 3- year CDC grant to bring the Asian Quitline to other states. Asian quitline services are offered in Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean and Vietnamese (each has a separate telephone #) and counseling staff are bilingual/trilingual as well as bicultural. With his grant free counseling services (initial and follow up calls) and in language written materials are provided.
States who are participating have to agree to provide media in order to promote the Asian Quitline. If free NRT is available to a state's English speaking callers, this must also be provided to the Asian Quitline callers.
APICAT (Asian Pacific Islander Coalition Against Tobacco) will be hosting a webinar on the Asian Quitline for the Korean community on Wed 11/3 from 6-7 pm PST. This will be an opportunity for participants to learn more about the project, have an opportunity to ask Dr Lee questions and then refer patients /community members who are interested in quitting smoking.
The webinar will be held in Korean and is most appropriate for states’ partner organizations that serve Korean tobacco users.
We are inviting other states to participate in order to learn more about the project as well as those states who are currently part of the project but would like to provide more information to the Korean community.
