Webinar on the Use of New Technology to Promote Tobacco Cessation

Tuesday, September 13, 2011
Posted by: Natalia Gromov

In a day when 47 percent of adults use social media, 85 percent own cell phones, and 72 percent use their phones to send and receive text messages, mobile technology and social media may be the new frontier for driving engagement in behavior change programs. Not only are these platforms specifically designed to engage users in a personalized way, but they also help to expand reach, particularly into minority and youth populations that have been traditionally harder to access.

Dr. Abroms is an assistant professor at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services. Her research focuses on the role of social marketing in health communications, specifically the application of new media technologies for smoking cessation in young adults and other populations. She is also the lead author and designer of Text2Quit℠.

"Tobacco use remains the number one cause of preventable death and disease in the United States,” says Dr. Abroms. "Evidence-based methods for quitting smoking currently reach only a fraction of smokers. Social media and mobile programs offer the possibility of extending the reach of evidence-based programs.”

Alere Wellbeing recently announced an exclusive agreement with Voxiva to integrate Text2Quit℠ with its industry-leading Quit For Life® Program. In addition to phone-based cognitive-behavioral coaching, web-based learning and social support, medication decision support and fulfillment, email coaching, and live chat, the Quit For Life® Program will now include a suite of up to 300 text messages designed to reinforce engagement, motivate participants, and keep them on track with their quit. This integrated offering represents the most technologically advanced, evidence-based, and engaging tobacco cessation program available today to employers, health plans, and government agencies.

Join Dr. Abroms and learn how new technologies can help drive real, measurable behavior change and reduce the healthcare costs tied to tobacco use.
