Thank you to every organization and individual who renewed their NAQC membership or joined as a new member in Fiscal Year 2012!

Revenues from membership dues allow us to address important new legislative and policy changes and be more flexible as an organization in meeting member needs and requests. We hope NAQC’s work in the past year has contributed to your success and we look forward to launching great new products and membership benefits this year!

Below is a review of important products and resources that we launched in the past year, including a member directory that is exclusively available to NAQC members, as well as new initiatives we will be working on in the coming months.

Tobacco Warning Label Resources
In 2011, both Canada and the U.S. have moved forward with regulatory processes to enhance their tobacco health warnings in a variety of ways, including increased size of the warning, updated graphic images, and stronger messages. In the coming months NAQC will be sharing new resources and providing technical assistance to prepare state and provincial quitlines for the new warning labels. The resources will include a webinar to share lessons learned by Australia and New Zealand regarding the impact of warnings on quitlines, and a report titled, Implementing Tobacco Warning Labels in North America: A Plan for Ensuring Adequate Access to Quitlines, that will outline critical strategic issues that need to be adequately addresses prior to the new label launch. Please visit the Tobacco Warning Labels page for more information.

Medicaid Coverage
On June 24, 2011 the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a series of changes to their coverage for tobacco cessation services and identified ways states can elect to expand coverage.NAQC has launched a Medicaid Learning Community to support shared-learning and dissemination of proven-practices related to effective implementation of the new guideline allowing quitlines as an allowable administrative cost expenditure as well as a number of technical assistance and webinar resources. For more information, please visit the Medicaid Coverage page.

Public-Private Partnerships
Developing partnerships with both the private and public health plan sector can help maximize quitline services and establish a level of sustainability. NAQC’s work will focus on 1) establishing a strong foundation of common knowledge among states, provinces and coalitions on how to advance tobacco coverage among public and private insurers, and 2) providing more intensive technical assistance to a small number of states. A series of webinars and technical assistance materials will be available in the coming months. For more information, please contact DebOsborne at dosborne@naquitline.org.

Annual Quitline Survey
Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2010 annual survey as well as the 2010-2011 budget survey. In order to decrease the staff burden on states and provinces, NAQC will be fielding a shorter version of the survey in early 2012. Please find important FY10 survey findings and benchmarking data below:
