National Day of Action: World No Tobacco Day
Legacy is supporting a national effort to protest a recent decision by Family Dollar to sell tobacco products in its 7,100 discount stores throughout the country. According to Family Dollar's website, they mainly operate in neighborhoods with "low-income and low-middle income families, including senior citizens, minorities and at-risk youth." For years, tobacco products have been disproportionately marketed to low socio-economic and minority youth and adults, and evidence has clearly shown that exposure to tobacco smoking can lead to youth smoking initiation. The prevalence of current smoking is greatest among adults with working class jobs, low educational levels, low income, and those who are unemployed; groups that comprise the very communities Family Dollar serves. Making tobacco products more broadly available will only exacerbate the risks to those communities already hardest hit by tobacco use and related diseases.
For this reason, we are encouraging local groups and concerned public health advocates to use World No Tobacco Day on May 31st as a National Day of Action to encourage Family Dollar to reverse their troubling decision.
to download a local action guide to assist groups with leading protest efforts in their communities. Please share with local grantees, youth activists, and other groups in your community that may also want to participate.
We will be holding a national conference call on May 21st at 4:00pm Eastern Time
