Celebrate World No Tobacco Day May 31st

On May 31st, the World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), highlighting the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for effective policies to reduce consumption. This year’s theme for WNTD is "tobacco industry interference.”
See below for ideas on how your organization can use the materials and resources below to commemorate World No Tobacco Day.We encourage you to share this e-mail with your tobacco control partners so that they, too, may use these products in their efforts. We also encourage partners to "like” and follow CDC Tobacco Free on Facebook and Twitter to easily share posts and tweets of interest.

Surgeon General Announces Winners of the Video Contest
An article announcing the winners of the Surgeon General’s video contest Tobacco—I’m Not Buying It will be available May 31st at to coincide with World No Tobacco Day. The article provides additional information about the contest winners and includes links to the winning videos. The contest was launched in conjunction with the March 2012 release of the Surgeon General’s Report Preventing Tobacco Use Among Youth and Young Adults, and all of the videos include key themes from the report.

Adult Awareness of Tobacco Advertising, Promotion, and Sponsorship — 14 Countries

This report examined adult awareness of tobacco industry advertising, promotion, and sponsorships using data from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey in 14 countries. Findings show that awareness of tobacco marketing is low in countries that have comprehensive bans. In all but one country, awareness of advertising in stores was highest as compared to other channels of tobacco marketing, such as billboards, sponsorship of sporting events, and sales or coupons for cigarettes.

State Tobacco Revenues Compared with Tobacco Control Appropriations — United States, 1998–2010

This report compared state tobacco revenues with state and federal tobacco control appropriations and Best Practices recommendations from 1998 to 2010. During this period, states collected a combined total of $243.8 billion in tobacco industry settlement pay­ments and cigarette excise tax revenues but invested only $8.1 billion in effective state tobacco control programs. Had states followed CDC’s published Best Practices guidelines, they would have invested $29.2 billion during that period. While total state and federal investment in state tobacco control efforts increased from 1998 to 2002, state investments have declined steadily every year since. And currently, many states face substantial cuts and near-elimination of program funding.
