CDC Feature for the Great American Smokeout

Monday, November 17, 2014
Posted by: Natalia Gromov

This week, CDC reaches out to smokers with practical tips to encourage people to stop smoking during the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout on November 20. We also have a special focus on smoking, pregnancy, and babies. We hope the resources listed below can help support people in your own community who want to quit.

Please share this email with your tobacco control partners so that they can use our materials, too. All materials are found on our November Media Calendar page, including links to the CDC feature article, quitting resources, and social media tools.

CDC Feature Article: The Great American Smokeout: Your Quit Day  (Espagñol)

This article:

·        Gives smokers compelling reasons to quit and tips on how to succeed:

o   Readers will learn five ways to prepare for their quit day.

o   They'll learn that a craving lasts only 3-5 minutes and will find healthy ideas on how to stay strong until the craving is past.

o   They'll find helpful, free quitting resources.

·        Will share the story of Amanda, one of CDC's Tips From Former Smokers campaign participants:

o   Amanda, a young mother from Wisconsin, shares what helped her manage stress and beat the addiction. She started smoking in 5th grade and was unable to quit when she became pregnant with her first child. Her baby was born 2 months early and spent weeks in a hospital incubator. A link within the article takes readers to an emotional video about Amanda’s story.

A Great American Smokeout Web button is available in a variety of sizes. States and partners can upload this button to their Web sites to help promote the 2013 Great American Smokeout and to link users to related content on this Web site.
