Child Nicotine Poisoning Prevention Act Gains Bipartisan Support!

Thursday, June 11, 2015
Posted by: Natalia Gromov
Following the advocacy of the AAP Legislative Conference participants, the Child Nicotine Poisoning Prevention Act has gained increased bipartisan support. In the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.) has joined on as a co-sponsor of the bill, making the House bill officially bipartisan. Also, Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) has joined on as a co-sponsor of the Senate bill, expanding the bipartisan support for the legislation in that chamber. This AAP-supported legislation would give the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission the authority to require child-proof packaging on liquid nicotine containers sold to consumers, and has already passed out of the Senate Commerce Committee. The Academy is urging Congress to quickly pass this legislation, and will continue advocating for its expedient enactment. Follow the progress of the Act online and read the fact sheet from Tobacco Control Legal Consortium about liquid nicotine poisoning.
