This premier convening brings together commercial tobacco control and public health professionals - including practitioners, advocates, government program staff, educators, and scientists - to advance efforts to reduce deaths and improve health outcomes related to commercial tobacco use, vaping, and nicotine pouches. This year, NCTOH is especially excited to welcome professionals working in cancer control and in fields related to cannabis use, reflecting the growing breadth of the conference.

Early bird registration rates are available through January 31, 2027, and registrants will have the option to reserve discounted rooms at the conference hotel as part of the registration process. The call for abstracts will open in August 2026.

Although there have been significant declines in cigarette use in the general and Veteran populations, rates of smoking persist and are high among some clinical subpopulations of Veterans. Many individuals want to quit, yet immediate readiness to quit (within the next 30 days) remains low. There is a significant gap in VHA provider knowledge and skills regarding evidence-based treatment approaches for Veterans who are not ready to quit smoking. Providers require education on effective medications, counseling strategies, and guideline-recommended interventions to increase quit attempts and abstinence among Veterans. The purpose of this knowledge-based, virtual training is to increase providers' knowledge of the treatment approaches for patients who are not ready to quit. The goal of this live knowledge-based Virtual Training is to educate VA Clinicians and healthcare teams about the evidence and clinical recommendations for pre-quit tobacco use treatment.

Richmond Center of Excellence (RCE) Early Career Implementation & Research Grant supports early career investigators in advancing innovative projects that reduce children’s exposure to tobacco and cannabis smoke and aerosols across clinical, community, and public health settings. This mentored funding opportunity is designed to strengthen the pipeline of pediatric tobacco control and implementation scientists by supporting feasible, high impact implementation, evaluation, or pilot research that translates evidence into real world practice.

For the purposes of this opportunity, early career investigators are defined as individuals within approximately 10 years of completing their terminal clinical training (e.g., residency or fellowship) or highest degree and who are in the early stages of establishing an independent research or implementation portfolio.

Projects may address tobacco smoke or tobacco smoke and tobacco related aerosol exposure, either alone or in combination with marijuana co exposure, including emerging nicotine or tobacco products when there is a clear and direct connection to child or adolescent exposure outcomes. Selected applicants will receive structured mentorship through the AAP Tobacco Consortium and may be invited to advance from a Letter of Intent to a full proposal stage.

The Early Career Implementation & Research Grant is funded by the Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute (FAMRI), which established the Richmond Center of Excellence to support research protecting children and families from tobacco smoke exposure.
