Highlights from the Board’s July Meeting!

At its July 16^th meeting, the Board discussed and took action on a host of important topics, including financial and fundraising reports, the budget for fiscal year 2013, a report from the audit committee, review of the CEO, an update on the progress of quitlines in North America, and planning for our upcoming discussion on the future of quitlines at NAQC Conference 2012 (stay tuned for more on this topic next week!). We also had the great pleasure of reviewing the Board election results.

On behalf of the Board, I would like to congratulate the newly elected NAQC Board members and to thank the many NAQC members who participated in this year’s election by putting forward names of stellar candidates and by casting your votes. The voting rate this year was 66% -- the highest rate NAQC has experienced since it began holding Board elections.

New Board Members!

We welcome our newly elected Board members, Sharon Campbell (reelected), Diane Canova and Amy Lukowski:

Sharon Campbell, PhD, MN, BN, is a senior scientist at Propel Centre for Population Health Impact and research associate professor at University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Sharon has 20 years of experience in cancer prevention research and evaluation with a focus on tobacco control. Her PhD in Public Health is from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Sharon has been the lead quitline evaluator in Canada since 2002 and the evaluation framework she developed was the basis for NAQC’s Minimal Data Set. This year she was asked to chair CDC’s National Quitline Database Evaluation Working Group which will identify priorities for evaluation at a national level.

Diane Canova, JD, is vice president for government affairs at the American LegacyFoundation in Washington, DC. Diane has over 25 years of progressivelyresponsible leadership in the public health sector, highlighted by successful legislativeand public policy initiatives, strong external partnerships and effective coalitions. Manyof those years focused on tobacco prevention, control and cessation policy and programs.Diane leads Legacy’s efforts to influence federal policy and regulatory decision-making on tobacco control and cessation issues. Legacy is working to ensure that the U.S. FDA Center for Tobacco Products exercises its authority over tobacco products in a proactive, comprehensive manner. Diane previously served as vice president of policy and programs with Partnership for Prevention where she led efforts to include preventive services in the Affordable Care Act, expansion of Medicare and Medicaid tobacco cessation, and development of "Action to Quit” online tobacco cessation resources.

Amy V. Lukowski, PsyD, is clinical director of health initiatives programs at National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado. She is a licensed psychologist, Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) and a MINT (Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers) trainer. Amy has expertise in working clinically with both individual patients and populations in overcoming dependence and creating health behavior change in the areas of tobacco cessation and weight management. Amy has served as an Assistant Professor of Psychosocial Medicine at National Jewish Health working with patients to overcome tobacco dependence and behavioral health concerns associated with chronic illness. Currently, she is responsible for the clinical leadership, staff training, aiding and monitoring the development and assessment of the program’s clinical quality assurance and quality improvement programs. She also serves as key member of senior management team and is involved with all aspects of the planning, budgeting processes, operational oversight and client relations.
