This study examines the phenomenon of high quitline coaching dropout rates, and factors that are highly correlated with quitline service abandonment. Data from one quitline for one year were examined (n=20,882). Results showed that nearly half of quitline enrollees completed only one session (47.8%). Yet of all the factors examined, all significant factors explained less than 4% of the variance. Not being sent NRT was most strongly correlated with completion of only one session. The authors conclude that further research should determine the extent of the problem in national quitline systems, increase knowledge of mediators of nonadherence, and develop strategies for increasing coaching completion.
