A
new policy brief Addressing
Tobacco Use Through Healthcare Systems: A Real-World Case Example of How to Reduce
Smoking Rates, Improve Patient Health and Lower Costs, a joint effort of Partnership for Prevention
and the Multi-State Collaborative for Health System Change, makes the case
that 1) healthcare provider rates of
smoking cessation intervention are unacceptably low, though these interventions
are effective and cost-effective and 2) when healthcare sites implement a
simple systems change - identifying patients who smoke and recording this in an
electronic medical record - positive results are realized.
