Encouraging Smoking Cessation During Pregnancy in West Virginia: Using Fax-to-Quit as a Cessation St

This study assessed the feasibility of a Fax-to-Quit program for pregnant women in West Virginia. Providers and staff from three OB/GYN clinic sites in three adjoining West Virginia counties were recruited to participated. All sties received training during one intensive half-day. Clinic sites screened pregnant women for smoking, assessed readiness to quit, and enrolled consenting participants in the Fax-to-Quit program. Of the 58 referrals made between March and December 2009, over one-quarter (25.9%) enrolled in quitline services. Success factors included contact, communication, and cooperation with clinic office staff. Results show that Fax-to-Quit is feasible to engage both providers and pregnant smokers with the quitline.
