The Community Preventive Services Task Force has posted its Task Force finding and rationale statement for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs.  This is the first time that the task force has done a review of comprehensive programs.  This can be a great tool as we seek to defend and increase funding for tobacco prevention and cessation programs. Especially helpful is the review of the economic evidence. The complete Finding and Rationale Statement can be found here: http://www.thecommunityguide.org/tobacco/comprehensive.html Reducing Tobacco Use and Secondhand Smoke Exposure: Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs Task Force Finding The Community Preventive Services Task Force recommends comprehensive tobacco control programs based on strong evidence of effectiveness in reducing tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure. Evidence indicates these programs reduce the prevalence of tobacco use among adults and young people, reduce tobacco product consumption, increase quitting, and contribute to reductions in tobacco-related diseases and deaths. Economic evidence indicates that comprehensive tobacco control programs are cost-effective, and savings from averted healthcare costs exceed intervention costs. Read the full Task Force Finding and Rationale Statement for more detailed information on the finding, including implementation issues, potential benefits and harms, and evidence gaps.
