We Need Your Help to Maintain Federal Funding for Quitlines!

Thursday, January 26, 2017
Posted by: Natalia Gromov
Dear Colleagues,

Yesterday, NAQC hosted a webinar to discuss possible decreases in federal funding for state quitlines and tobacco control, and strategies for continuing to keep quitline services available to smokers who want to quit. This is a CALL TO ACTION, TO HELP MAKE THE CASE FOR CONTINUED FUNDING FOR QUITLINES!

Meg Riordan from the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids joined us to discuss the real and very serious threat of Congressional repeal of the Affordable Care Act, which includes the Prevention and Public Health Fund (PPHF). PPHF includes $1 billion for federal prevention programs and provides more than half of the CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health’s (OSH) overall funding.  OSH provides funding for the Tips Campaign, state quitlines, state tobacco control programs, and other important activities. Meg also discussed the upcoming battle over the CDC/OSH appropriations for FY17 and FY18. Decisions on the PPHF will likely be made by late February and FY17 appropriations will likely be made by the end of April.

Given the timeline for federal decision-making, it is urgent to help make the case for quitlines and tobacco control. For those of you who have access to personal stories from quitline clients and who are able to take action, we ASK:

Please be Very Active in Telling Our Story!
  • Make quitlines real and concrete – document what they do and their impact
  • Members of Congress are interested in hearing about their own states
    • Please compile state by state information about the value of quitlines – the number of calls to quitline, number of quitters
    • Personal stories of impact
    • Identify specific implications of large funding cuts

Please Raise Your Voices – This is Critical!
  • Package data and personal stories – share with policymakers
    • Via letter or email
    • In-District meeting
    • Social media
  • Generate earned media about quitline and its impact – share clippings/stories with policymakers
  • Identify someone who has benefitted and invite them to share their story with policymaker and/or the media
  • Invite policymaker to the quitline call center (or share a video showing the call center)
  • Attend elected officials’ town hall events and discuss the impact of the quitlines and the importance of continued stable OSH funding. Consider bringing someone who has benefited from a quitline to tell his or her personal story.
  • If your organization has government affairs representatives, request that they raise the importance of the PPHF and stable funding for OSH in their meetings with elected officials.

Please Share Your Data and Stories with NAQC and CTFK!
If you have questions or need help, please contact Linda and Meg. Please let us know if you are developing materials so we know what is coming!!

Thanks very much for all you do!
