A large-scale randomized, controlled effectiveness trial is under way in New York, using the Forever Free relapse-prevention booklets. In two previous efficacy trials, distribution of these booklets has been found to significantly reduce relapse through two years follow-up, and to be highly cost-effective. The ongoing study is testing their clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness when used to supplement standard quitline smoking cessation strategies.
In the three-arm study, 3400 quitline callers have been randomized to receive either usual care, the eight Forever Free booklets at once, or the eight booklets distributed over a year. Follow-up will continue for two years, ending in 2012. The study is funded by the National Cancer Institute (R01 CA137357) and is a collaboration between Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL (PI, Thomas Brandon, Ph.D.) and the Roswell Park Cancer Institute (Michael Cummings, Ph.D., MPH). For more information, or to request a sample set of Forever Free "Quitline Plus” booklets, contact Thomas Brandon, Ph.D via e-mail.
