Clinician Acquisition and Retention of Motivational Interviewing skills: A Two-and-a-Half-Year Exploratory Study Forsberg L, Forsberg LG, Lindqvist H, Helgason AR. Subst Abuse Treat Prev Policy. 2010 May 13;5(1):8. [Epub ahead of print]
This study examined the uptake and retention of Motivational Interviewing (MI) skills in counselors at the Swedish National Tobacco Quitline over a 30 month period during which counselors received ongoing supervision. Skill levels improved for all counselors over the study period. However, the level of skill between counselors varied greatly, and individual counselor performance fluctuated over time. The study provides potential ways to test MI skill, to evaluate MI training, and to assess acquisition and retention of MI skills over time. The authors conclude that continuous feedback and supervision are critical for enhancing and maintaining MI skills over time in a quitline setting.
