On December 18, the U.S. Surgeon General issued a rare advisory, warning about the epidemic of e-cigarette use among teens and urging states, communities, and health professionals to take measures to restrict the use of this product by young people.
On a related note, the National Institutes of Health’s newly released 2018 Monitoring the Future Survey shows e-cigarette use by U.S. teens is skyrocketing, with more than 37 percent of 12th graders reporting use in the past year, compared to roughly 28 percent in 2017. The increase in vaping among high school students is the largest percentage point increase ever recorded by the survey for any past 30-day substance use outcome. At the same time, teen use of alcohol, opioids, and conventional tobacco products has declined.
