Learn about progress made toward achieving the Healthy People 2020 Tobacco Leading Indicators. You’ll also hear how ClearWay Minnesota and the Minnesota Department of Health are partnering to reduce tobacco use and exposure.
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the United States. Each year, nearly half a million American adults die prematurely of smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke. Every day, about 2,000 young people aged 18 or younger try their first cigarette. Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body. Preventing tobacco use and helping people who use tobacco to quit can improve health and quality of life for many Americans.
