  • The 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Released by CDC, the BRFSS updates the adult smoking prevalence rate in each state. We have updated the data on our website and in our detailed state toll sheets.
  • 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Released by SAMHSA, NSDUH includes estimates of the number of youth who try cigarettes for the first time each year and who become new regular, daily smokers. The 2018 NSDUH data estimate that each day, 1,900 kids in the United States try their first cigarette and another 250 kids under 18 years of age become new regular, daily smokers. That’s more than 95,000 new underage daily smokers in this country each year.

As a result of this new data release, the state estimates for the number of kids who become new regular, daily smokers each year and the number of kids who try cigarettes for the first time each year on our website and in our detailed state toll sheets have been updated. Per household state & federal tax burden from smoking-caused government expenditures have been updated to account for the 2018 American Community Survey estimate of the number of households in each state.
