NAQC congratulates Rod Lew  on  being selected to receive the Andre Stanley Memorial Health Equity Award which honors an individual who has contributed to public health efforts to build health equity and reduce health disparities in the areas of substance use. The ATOD Section is recognizing Rod for his leadership to address the disproportionate impact of commercial tobacco among Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities and other priority populations. Rod is a tireless champion and advocate for the inclusion of AANHPI communities in tobacco control and cancer prevention efforts. Through his leadership, APPEAL has trained hundreds of leaders using the APPEAL leadership model and trained them on APPEAL’s 4-Prong Policy model.  He recognizes the importance of research not only in guiding work in the community as well as pushing researchers to listen to and learn from the wisdom of communities to inform tobacco control work.  Rod fights to ensure that AANHPI communities have a voice in policy and to support their engagement by developing skills and understanding.  He has encouraged local, state, and federal agencies to prioritize AANHPI communities in their programs to address their needs.  While much of APPEAL’s emphasis is on AANHPI communities, Rod has encouraged cross-cultural models that build leadership and skills in the AANHPI, African American, American Indian, Latino/Hispanic, and LGBTQ communities.  Leaders trained by APPEAL can be found in public health leadership roles throughout the country.
