Balls JE, Price JH, Dake JA, Jordan TR, Khuder S. J Natl Med Assoc. 2010 Jul;102(7):579-89. This study examined African American primary care physicians’ perceptions and practices regarding smoking cessation counseling. While most reported asking about patients’ smoking status (89%) and documenting it (70%), arranging follow-up was the least frequently used component (60%). Study participants were far less likely to recommend nicotine replacement therapy, prescribe pharmacotherapy, and to provide support or follow-up for patients willing to quit. The authors conclude that physicians need more education in providing cessation counseling.
