The
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) at the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), will
direct $1.65 billion in Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block
Grant funding and $825 million in Community Mental Health Services Block Grant
funding to states and territories. The Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment
Block Grant program allows states and territories to plan, implement and
evaluate activities to prevent and treat substance use disorder. This funding
will also allow recipients to maximize efficiency in existing treatment and
recovery infrastructure, promote support for providers and address unique local
needs to deliver substance use disorder prevention.
SAMHSA is accepting applications
for Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) grants.
The purpose of this program is to implement SBIRT for children, adolescents
and/or adults in primary care and community health settings – with a focus on
screening for underage drinking, opioid use and other substance use. SAMHSA
plans to issue approximately 10 awards of up to $995,000 per year for up to
five years.
