The Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) announced a new website, www.sophescript.org, featuring its evidence-based program, Smoking Cessation Reduction in Pregnancy Treatment, also known as SCRIPT®.

This resource for healthcare providers, social workers, health educators, and allied health professionals serves as a “one stop” shop for information on SOPHE’s comprehensive SCRIPT® training workshops and accompanying patient materials to assist pregnant women in tobacco cessation.

The website provides information on virtual and face-to-face trainings for clinical and behavioral health specialists about how-to screen and assess pregnant women for smoking status, implement SCRIPT® as part of routine care, and make organizational changes to support SCRIPT® implementation and evaluation for quality improvement.

Based on 30 years of research, SCRIPT® is an effective, evidence-based intervention cited by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence clinical practice guidelines (2000 and 2008).

Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of numerous pregnancy complications, preterm delivery, and low birth weight in infants. According to a 2006 analysis, implementing a smoking cessation intervention among pregnant women could potentially result in net savings of from $400,000 to $8 million.

“Pregnancy represents a unique 'teachable moment' in a woman’s life,” says Elaine Auld, MPH, MCHES®, SOPHE CEO. “Many women find new reasons to quit when they realize they are pregnant and SCRIPT® gives them the tools to do so.”

The SCRIPT® intervention does not require an additional appointment or separate class. Rather, it is provided as a routine part of clinical care and incorporates the patient guide, A Pregnant Woman’s Guide to Quit Smoking, a screening of a brief Commit to Quit video with testimonials of former pregnant smokers, and a 10-15-minute motivational counseling intervention. The SCRIPT® program integrates the 5As of Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist and Arrange during the woman’s prenatal appointment.
