Good News on Quitline Utilization in 2021! Dear Members,
Good news! Quitline utilization is moving in a positive direction. During the first quarter of 2021 (January 1 - March 31) 141,770 calls were made to state quitlines through 1-800-QUIT-NOW. This is a 9.7% increase in call volume compared to the first quarter of 2020 and a 2.8% increase compared to 2019. The increase in call volume is attributable to a large increase in calls during March as the CDC Tips from Former Smokers campaign was launched.
The second quarter of 2021 (April 1 - June 30) will be critical for making up ground that we lost in 2020, when call volume for the quarter decreased by 39% (compared to 2019). If quitlines receive 216,312 calls in the second quarter of this year we will be on-track with the call volume in 2019. Given the strong metrics for the first quarter, this level of calls is achievable.
How can we ensure that quitlines receive 216,312 or more calls through 1-800-QUIT-NOW between April 1-June 30?- The Tips from Former Smokers campaign will run throughout the second quarter and based on metrics from March, the impact of the campaign appears to be back to normal. We can expect a high volume of calls throughout the quarter. By promoting Tips activities at the state and community levels, you can help amplify the impact of the campaign.
- I COVID QUIT, a social media campaign developed by the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center (SCLC) to encourage smokers with behavioral health conditions to quit, is available for adoption by states and partners. SCLC and its partners have developed resources you can use to boost calls to quitlines.
Toolkit: ICOVIDQUIT_SMToolkit.indd (ucsf.edu) Information for consumers and providers: https://smokingcessationleadership.ucsf.edu/icovidquit. - 24 states reported that they encouraged smokers to quit during the pandemic. Strategies and approaches are noted in NAQC’s recent report and webinar. Members can learn more by posting questions and ideas to NAQC’s Listserv to hear from your peers. We look forward to updating you of quitline utilization again in June. Please keep us informed about your cessation promotion activities and questions!
