Navajo Nation Bans Most Indoor Smoking, Including Casinos.On November 6, 2021, Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez signed into law historic legislation that prohibits indoor smoking in most Navajo Nation reservation locations, including the Tribe’s four casinos. At 27,000 square miles, the Navajo Nation is the largest Native American reservation in the U.S. The “Nich’ Éí Bee Ííná – Air is Life Act of 2021” law prohibits the use of cigarettes, chewing tobacco, electronic cigarettes, and other commercial tobacco products in public buildings and workspaces, including within 25 feet of any indoor area. The smoke-free requirement does not apply to the ceremonial use of tobacco or to private homes unless they are used as day care centers, adult care centers, or business offices. Tribal lawmakers approved the comprehensive smoke-free bill in October 2021, after over thirteen years of work by Tribal leaders and public health advocates to educate the community on the dangers of secondhand smoke.» learn more
