Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom and Call to Action

Dear NAQC Community,

Monday, we celebrate Juneteenth — the day the enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned they had been freed and took their first steps toward equality. Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom that touches us all. It's a day to celebrate the Black community's resilience and triumph and reflect on the significant work to be done.

Recent NAQC data show that the percentage of Black adults quitlines serve is increasing, from 14.7% of participants in FY20 to 16.5% in FY22. Quitlines are also working to improve culturally responsive promotion and services; seventeen states report conducting tailored outreach to the Black community, and over a third of state quitlines have adopted protocols to help people who use menthol products. Despite this progress, we must recommit to act and amplify efforts and resources to improve equitable quitline practice and accelerate declines in tobacco harm.

NAQC believes in the transformative power of community— we are united by our resolve to change course by listening more, learning together, and taking bold actions so all people have access to effective help for tobacco use, regardless of who they are or where they live.

We are grateful for your partnership and look forward to our continued work together towards a healthier, more just future.

In solidarity,

Michelle and Paula
