Wednesday, July 9 at 1 PM CT Increasing taxes on commercial tobacco products is a highly effective public health intervention. Studies have consistently shown that a higher tax on these products increases the number of quit attempts by people who are addicted to them, while making initiation less likely among young people, who are particularly price sensitive. Increasing tobacco product taxes also increases government revenue, which can lead to additional public health benefits if the revenue is dedicated to commercial tobacco control efforts or other public health measures. This 45-minute webinar will provide an overview of public health best practices surrounding the taxation of these harmful products and then feature a panel of experts who were involved in the development, advocacy effort, and eventual adoption of comprehensive tax legislation passed into law by the Navajo Nation in November 2024. Panelists will describe the relevant tax policy provisions, including comprehensive definitions and the setting of tax rates that aim to achieve equalization among all commercial tobacco products, the importance of directing revenue toward culturally tailored prevention programs, and the work done behind the scenes by a community-led coalition that resulted in the successful passage of this landmark legislation. The lessons learned from this policy success story can be applied to other Tribes, state governments, and advocates and serve as an example of how to enact strong commercial tobacco control policies that benefit public health.
