Associate
Director, Youth Advocacy
The Associate Director, Youth
Advocacy oversees all youth advocacy programming at the Campaign for
Tobacco-Free Kids (TFK) in Washington, D.C. The Associate Director
integrates youth advocacy with TFK-wide federal, state and local agendas and
serves as the primary liaison between TFK and TFK’s youth advocates, as well as
local, state, national, international and tribal youth advocacy partners.
The Associate Director works to increase the breadth and depth of youth
involvement in activities for tobacco prevention and control. This
position oversees the Youth Advocates of the Year Awards (YAYA) program,
subsequent YAYA engagement and Kick Butts Day; provides leadership on aspects
of the YAYA Gala; maintains regular contact with the TFK’s youth advocates,
manages TFK’s youth advocacy efforts at the National and World Conferences on
Tobacco or Health (NCTOH, WCTOH) and the Smokeless Tobacco Conference and works
to build a network of adult coordinators working with youth across the country.
The Associate Director also collaborates with the Development Department to
identify and pursue fundraising opportunities for TFK’s youth advocacy
programs, and to assist in implementation of special projects. This position
reports to the Director, Outreach.
Responsibilities:
Youth
Advocacy
- Plan and manage
all aspects of the Youth Advocates of the Year Awards program and subsequent YAYA engagement including the YAYA Symposium.
- Promote the YAYA program and recruit applicants.
- Create, edit,
and distribute materials.
- Manage the
nominee selection process, including outreach to members of our partner
organizations to serve as judges, and collaboration with TFK staff members
across departments to participate in the phone interview process.
- Manage the
design and implementation of all YAYA engagement programming, and work to
foster partnerships between YAYAs and TFK staff.
- Directly
supervise youth advocates throughout any TFK events/trainings, and manage staff
working in support of the event/training. This includes managing contracts with
consultants serving as trainers for the event, as well as our contract with the
host site.
- Serve as a
liaison between TFK, our youth advocates, their parents and their program
advisors in preparation for the event/training.
- Assist youth
advocates in creating a year-round strategic action plan, and support them
throughout the year in implementing this plan in collaboration with TFK.
- Work with
project manager on the coordination of the Youth Advocates of the Year Awards
Gala Dinner.
- Coordinate the
involvement of the YAYA winners, parents and advisors in the Gala and all
related activities.
- Manage all
aspects of the Kick Butts Day program, including activities and material
development, web-site design, and planning national and regional events.
- Act as a liaison
between TFK and our Youth Advocates and their advisors to involve them in the
Kick Butts Day planning process and Kick Butts Day events.
- Oversee outreach
to national and state partners to help promote KBD.
- Work directly
with key event organizers in top media markets and advocacy priority states to
help develop and promote high profile KBD events.
- Serve as a
liaison between the KBD Media Team, State Team and Federal Team and key event
organizers and state youth program managers to cultivate strategic advocacy
focused KBD events.
- Collaborate with
TFK Communications staff and consultants to support KBD media outreach at all
levels.
- Identify and
help prepare TFK youth advocates to participate in the KBD VNR and SMT.
- Manage TFK’s
youth advocacy programming and YAYA participation in the NCTOH, WCTOH,
Smokeless Tobacco Conference and other major conferences and events.
- Develop and
manage the budget for Youth Advocacy, Kick Butts Day, and TFK youth advocacy
programming.
- Work with
Development Department to report to funders including United Health Foundation
on a regular basis.
- Coordinate the
participation of TFK Youth Advocates in conferences, training sessions, youth
summits, etc., managing their role as TFK spokespeople.
- Oversee projects
undertaken by the Youth Advocates, and continue to create and manage new
programs to expand TFK’s existing youth advocacy program.
- Represent TFK at
local, state, national and international venues. Make presentations and
conduct youth advocacy workshops and training sessions on behalf of TFK for
youth advocates and advisors across the country and globally.
- Serve as a TFK
liaison with partner groups that have youth advocacy programs (Legacy etc.) and
with state based youth advocacy programs in collaboration with the State Team
and Federal Team.
·Work with youth advocacy staff at
Legacy to plan and execute the Coordinator Camp network both online, by phone
and through in-person trainings.

Compile and distribute Youth
Advocacy updates to TFK staff, youth advocates and their advisors.

Collaborate with other departments
to find ways to involve youth advocates in TFK’s local, state, national,
international and tribal advocacy activities.

Manage the responsibilities
undertaken by youth advocacy interns and the youth advocacy program associate.
Other Responsibilities
- Work
collaboratively with other departments on special projects as assigned.
- Work with the
Development Department to identify and pursue development opportunities around
youth advocacy.
- Foster ongoing relationships
with TFK partners in accordance with events and special projects, particularly
Kick Butts Day.
- Coordinate
and/or assist in outreach to new organizations and corporations to cultivate
partnerships that complement TFK events and special projects.
Required Skills
- Minimum BS/BA in
communications, political science or related field.
- Minimum of 4
years experience with grassroots advocacy, public health policy, or youth
advocacy desired.
- Excellent
writing ability.
- Ability to
operate independently with only general supervision.
- Ability to
juggle multiple projects with varied deadlines.
- Sound
organizational skills and detail-orientation.
- Ability to
remain flexible and modify priorities as needed.
- Commitment to
the issue of tobacco control.
