The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is seeking exceptional candidates to be considered for the position of Director of the Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) in the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP). NCCDPHP leads national efforts to promote health and well-being through prevention and control of chronic diseases. The center’s strategic priorities are strengthening epidemiology and surveillance, promoting environmental improvement to increase opportunities for health, strengthening health systems to effectively deliver preventive services, and promoting linkages between the community and clinical settings to better manage chronic conditions. OSH employs these and other strategies as the lead federal agency for comprehensive tobacco prevention and control. To protect the public's health from the harmful effects of tobacco use, OSH develops, conducts, and supports strategic efforts by administering national mass media campaigns to inform Americans about the dangers of tobacco use in order to reduce death and disability due to smoking; setting a strategic direction for CDC’s role in tobacco prevention and control; funding and providing technical assistance to states, territories, and tribal health departments for comprehensive tobacco control programs; conducting research and surveillance of the U.S. population for tobacco use trends; evaluating the effectiveness of public health interventions; and promoting and stimulating research on the determinants and health effects of smoking and noncombustible tobacco use. In addition, OSH administers the Global Tobacco Surveillance System, in partnership with the CDC Foundation, the World Health Organization (WHO), and private funders.
