On December 9, 2010, the latest Surgeon General’s report—How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease—The Biology and Behavioral Basis for Tobacco-Attributable Disease: A Report of the Surgeon General—will be released at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. At the press event, CDC will unveil a new 30-second public service announcement (PSA) featuring the U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Regina M. Benjamin. The PSA will feature 1-800-QUIT-NOW in the tag. Please read below for information on how the PSA will be distributed and other media opportunities that CDC will offer to states and CPPW communities:
Distribution of the PSA -By the end of December, the PSA will be distributed to all TV network and cable stations (about 1,000). TV networks and cable stations may start running the PSA in late December/early January.
-The PSA also will be provided to states and CPPW communities (Communities Putting Prevention to Work) via CDC’s Media Campaign Resource Center (MCRC), within one week of the release, to place in their local media markets.
Other Media Opportunities Offered to States and CPPW Communities Early the week of December 6, OSH will send an e-mail blast to states and CPPW communities letting them know about the resources (listed below) that will be available and how to access them to further promote the Surgeon General’s report. OSH also will announce the availability of the resources on its December 16th Media Network call, conducted for state tobacco control program health communication staff, program managers, national networks, tribal support centers, and national partners. States and CPPW communities will not start airing these ads until January or later. learn more
