Ten years ago, on August 17, 2006, Judge Gladys Kessler ruled that ten tobacco industry defendants had violated civil racketeering laws as a result of a decades-long, industry-wide conspiracy to deceive the American public about the harmful effects of tobacco use and the industry’s knowledge of those dangers. In the intervening decade, the remedies imposed by the court continue to be litigated and appealed by an industry desperate to avoid responsibility for its actions. This webinar will discuss the case, and the role of public health groups who intervened and became parties to the litigation, the case’s impact on tobacco control advocacy and individual lawsuits against the tobacco industry, and the case’s broader impact on public health.
