Appeals Court: Tobacco Companies Must Include Corrective Warning Statements!

				On April 25, a federal appeals court reaffirmed that tobacco companies must comply with a decade-old court order requiring them to publish corrective statements about the dangers of their cigarette products.  This long-overdue tobacco control victory was tempered slightly by the court’s decision to reject the requirement that the statements include the phrase “Here is the truth.” 
 
In 2006, in the historic federal racketeering case U.S. v. Philip Morris, U.S. District Court Judge Gladys Kessler ruled that the tobacco manufacturers had engaged in a massive conspiracy to deceive the American public. Part of the ruling was a requirement that the manufacturers run corrective statements about their products, preceded by the simple statement “Here is the truth.” The tobacco industry has resisted this remedy for over a decade.
