Newly Updated State Tobacco Tax Fact Sheets

Monday, April 5, 2010
Now that Utah's and New Mexico's tax increases are official, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids has updated their state tax fact sheets online.

Here are the new stats:

Overall All States’ Average: $1.38 per pack
Major Tobacco States’ Average: 40.2 cents per pack
Non-Tobacco States’ Average: $1.51 per pack

Just to put those in perspective, one year ago, the average of all states was $1.21 per pack, the tobacco states' average was 38.5 cents per pack, and the non-tobacco states' average was $1.32 per pack.

There are now 29 states, DC, Puerto Rico, the Northern Marianas, and Guam that have cigarette tax rates of $1.00 per pack or higher; 14 states, DC, and Guam have cigarette tax rates of $2.00 per pack or higher; and two states (CT and RI) and Guam have cigarette tax rates of $3.00 per pack or higher! (Guam increased its cigarette tax rate by $2.00, effective April 6th.)

46 states and DC have increased their cigarette tax rates 99 times since 2002.
