On June 11th, ACS released its public health statement on eliminating combustible tobacco use in the U.S. in the journal CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians. The new statement greatly expands upon and complements the ACS Position Statement on Electronic Cigarettes that was published in February 2018.

The public health statement outlines ACS’s targeted approach to eliminating combustible tobacco use, with the goal of substantially reducing cancer incidence and mortality and other adverse health effects.  Eliminating cancer caused by tobacco use is ACS’s highest public health priority. ACS makes it clear:  All smokers should stop smoking cigarettes, which are responsible for the vast majority of tobacco-related deaths. Every effort should also be made to get smokers off all forms of tobacco and to prevent everyone – especially youth – from starting to use any tobacco product.

A top priority for ACS will be to urge smokers, their clinicians and health systems to employ evidence-based cessation treatments that can substantially boost the success rate. The new statement is based on the most authoritative, up-to-date scientific resources, and may be viewed here: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.3322/caac.21455
