New State Tobacco Tax Rankings Released

Two state increases in one week! HI's governor just signed a cigarette tax increase that will make its rate $3.00 per pack on July 1, 2010. There will be an additional 20-cent rate increase on July 1, 2011 that had passed as part of a multi-stage increase last year.
So, here are the new stats:
- Overall Average for All States: $1.41 per pack
- Major Tobacco States’ Average: 40.2 cents per pack
- Non-Tobacco States’ Average: $1.54 per pack
- There are now four states (CT, HI, RI, and WA) with cigarette tax rates of $3.00 or higher.
