Since August 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Food and Drug Administration, state and local health departments, and others have been investigating a national outbreak of e-cigarette, or vaping, product use–associated lung injury (EVALI).

This study compared the characteristics of hospitalized patients with fatal cases of EVALI with those of patients with nonfatal cases to improve the ability of clinicians to identify patients at increased risk for death from the condition.

Chronic conditions, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiac disease, and any mental health condition, were common among hospitalized patients with EVALI. Clinicians and public health practitioners should ensure an accurate and timely assessment of exposures and cessation of those exposures.
