The Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF) released an update to recommendations on internet-based interventions to help adults quit smoking. The Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF) recommends internet-based interventions to increase the number of adult tobacco users who successfully quit. This recommendation updates and replaces their 2011 finding of insufficient evidence for internet-based tobacco cessation interventions. The new recommendation is based on evidence that showed meaningful increases in the number of adult tobacco users who successfully quit using tobacco six or more months following intervention. A team of specialists collected and analyzed evidence from 45 studies in the following published review. McCrabb S, Baker AL, Attia J, Skelton E, Twyman L, et al. Internet-based programs incorporating behavior change techniques are associated with increased smoking cessation in the general population: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Annals of Behavioral Medicine 2019:53(2):180-95. The CPSTF recommends internet-based interventions that include interactive content and tailored guidance or support systems, alone or with additional interventions. » learn more
