				On
January 16, Mexico’s comprehensive new commercial tobacco law
took effect – one of the strictest anti-tobacco laws in the world. The law,
part of the country's General Law for Tobacco Control reform,
bans all smoking in indoor and outdoor public spaces, such as hotels, resorts,
beaches, parks, and any place children might gather. The only place to smoke
tobacco legally in Mexico today is in private homes or private outdoor spaces.
Anyone who smokes in public can be fined between $50 and $300 and those who
refuse to cooperate with the law can face up to 36 hours in jail. Mexico’s law
also prohibits the promotion, advertising, and sponsorship of tobacco products,
and restricts the importation and sale of e-cigarettes and vapes.
