Juneteenth marks a date of major significance in American history and shows us that freedom and racial equality have always been a hard-fought battle for black Americans – a battle that continues to this day. It is a reminder that "nobody is free until everybody is free." Recent NAQC data show that the percentage of Black adults quitlines serve is increasing, from 14.7% of participants in FY20 to 16.5% in FY22. Quitlines are also working to improve culturally responsive promotion and services; seventeen states report conducting tailored outreach to the Black community, and over a third of state quitlines have adopted protocols to help people who use menthol products. Despite this progress, we must recommit to action and amplify efforts and resources to improve equitable quitline practice and accelerate declines in tobacco harm.
NAQC believes in the transformative power of community— we are united by our resolve to change course by listening more, learning together, and taking bold actions so all people have access to effective help for tobacco use, regardless of who they are or where they live.
