WASHINGTON, DC (June 21, 2011) - Today, the Food and Drug Administration released the nine health warning labels that will be visible on all cigarette packs beginning in September 2012. These were selected from 36 warnings presented for public comment last fall. In following with the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, all cigarette packs will have a large, graphic warning label covering 50% of both the front and back of the packs along with providing the tobacco cessation helpline, 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
The National Latino Tobacco Control Network (NLTCN) commends the FDA and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) for this important public health action. Dr. Jeannette Noltenius, National Director of NLTCN said: "We are truly delighted to see that the FDA chose warnings that show the smoker the consequences of smoking and included the 1-800-QUITNOW number in all warning labels. This has created a historic opportunity in which smokers are encouraged to think about quitting and connect them with them with services that will help them quit and stay quit".
Furthermore, she stated:"DHSS realizes that these warning labels will increase the number of smokers calling the QUITLINES, therefore has allotted funds to fund QUITLINE services. Most of the QUITLINES have Spanish speaking counselors so that all Latinos are encouraged to call." Smoking cessation is part of a comprehensive approach to tobacco control, together with tax increases, community programs and counter-advertising. NLTCN hopes that DHSS continues to fund programs that will train, empower and engage Latinos at the local and state levels so that Latinos living in all states and Puerto Rico will benefit.
NLTCN is especially excited about these new warning labels and the role they will play in improving health. Graphic warning labels and simple language will help Latinos and others with lower socioeconomic status grasp the dangers and get the message. By combining stark, in-your-face graphics with easy, accessible tobacco cessation counseling, these new health warning labels give promise to reducing the chances that kids will pick up the habit and will lower smoking rates all across the country, especially within poorer and less educated communities.

FDA publica 9 etiquetas con advertencias gráficas para ser usadas en todas las cajetillas de cigarrillos
WASHINGTON, DC (21 de junio 2011) El día de hoy la Administración de Alimentos y Drogas (FDA) de los Estados Unidos presentó nueve etiquetas gráficas de advertencia que estarán en el 50% de cada lado de todos los paquetes de cigarrillos desde septiembre del 2012. Esta acción es un componente de la ley que fue aprobada en el Congreso de los Estados Unidos en el 2009 llamada la Ley del Control y la Prevención del Tabaquismo y en favor de la Familia. Además el FDA tomó la decisión acertada de agregar en la etiquetas el número, 1-800-QUIT-NOW, que dirige a las personas a las líneas de cada estado y/o Puerto Rico y que apoya los fumadores que quieren dejar de fumar.
Latinos Saludables Sin Tabaco es la red nacional Latina que promueve medidas públicas y privadas para el control y la prevención del tabaquismo. Esta red tiene más de 3,300 miembros en los Estados Unidos y Puerto Rico. La Dra. Jeannette Noltenius, Directora Nacional de la Red, dijo este día: "Estamos muy contentos con esta acción que ha tomado el Departamento de Salud y el FDA, pues las advertencias no solamente son fuertes y explícitas si no que también incluyen el numero 1-800-QUIT-NOW en todas las etiquetas y van a promover el dejar de fumar. Para los que trabajamos en salud pública, hoy es un día histórico, pues estas gráficas son en efecto mensajes que van a desmitificar la industria que promueve cigarrillos que matan a cada dos de sus usuarios con imagines que hacen creer a los que fuman que el fumar los hace más atractivos, más sensuales y más exitosos."
El Departamento de Salud de los Estados Unidos asimismo dio a conocer que han puesto recursos designados para las Líneas para Dejar de Fumar, llamadas en ingles QUITLINES para que estas puedan hacerle frente a una creciente demanda de servicios una vez estas advertencias sean implementadas. La mayoría de las líneas para dejar de fumar en los estados tienen consejeros que hablan español y/o acceso a traductores para ayudar a aquellos Latinos que prefieren recibir dichos servicios en su lengua materna. Latinos Saludables Sin Tabaco espera que los entes gubernamentales pongan fondos y ahínco en financiar programas a nivel local y estatal que concentren sus esfuerzos en crear liderazgo, programas, campañas publicitarias y políticas que involucren a la comunidad Latina para que esta tome acción previniendo que los jóvenes empiecen a fumar y que aquellos que fuman, dejen de fumar. Asimismo, otro componente esencial es el de promover ambientes libres del humo de tabaco pues este daña a la salud de inmediato y la exposición constante tiene consecuencias a corto y largo plazo para los no-fumadores también llamados -fumadores pasivos--. Esto es especialmente importante para aquellos con enfermedades crónicas como la diabetes.
La línea para dejar de fumar en Puerto Rico -Déjalo Ya - ha tenido mucho éxito en la isla y esperamos que estas etiquetas gráficas continúen dándole al fumador una ayuda importante para dejar de fumar.
