A New Standard Added to the American College of Surgeons Accreditation Program

A new American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer standard (Standard 5.9: Smoking Cessation for Patients with Cancer), effective January 1, 2026, requires cancer programs to systematically assess smoking and connect patients who smoke to evidence‑based cessation support. One way for health systems to meet this standard is by referring patients directly to their state tobacco quitline.
