The ANR Foundation is
pleased to announce the January 2012 quarterly update to the lists and maps of
U.S. municipalities and states with smokefree laws now in effect.
Congratulations to all the cities with new strong smokefree laws in effect, like
Alexandria, LA, Kansas City, KS, and Florence,
SC!

2011 was another year
filled with hard work by committed advocates working on ensuring everyone’s
right to breathe safe smokefree air. While 47 municipalities passed smokefree laws in
2011 (see list following this announcement) we still
have a long way to go, and many gaps remain. Far too many cities, counties and
states still have not made all workplaces smokefree, especially in their bars
and casinos.
A total of
493 municipalities now
have ordinances in
effect for 100% smokefree non-hospitality workplaces,
restaurants, AND bars, along with 23
states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Washington D.C. These strong
laws now protect 48.6% of the U.S.
population.
A total of
643 municipalities have a
local law in
effect that require both restaurants and bars
to be smokefree, along with 29 states, Puerto Rico,
the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Washington D.C. These laws protect
64.5% of the U.S.
population.
Other
HIghlights:
- Our Smokefree Gambling
Map showing where all state-regulated gambling
facilities are smokefree by state/territory law, now includes local
laws as well.
- Our "Platinum-standard"
Map now shows the state/territory smokefree laws
that cover non-hospitality workplaces,
restaurants,
bars, AND gambling
venues (WRBG).
- The trend for 100% smokefree college
campuses has hit another big milestone. There are
now over 600 colleges and universities with smokefree campus-wide policies.
Check our updated list to see all 637 of them.
- Smokefree
parks laws also expanded this year, with
112 new laws taking effect to make local parks 100% smokefree in 2011.
- Please note that if a law contains
an exemption allowing the use of electronic
cigarettes, the ANR Foundation does not consider the law to be 100%
smokefree, and it will not appear on our 100% lists. For more information about
the health concerns of exposure to electronic cigarettes, please visit: http://no-smoke.org/learnmore.php?id=645.

Did you expect to see
a new law included, but don't see it on our lists? That is either because the
law is not yet in
effect, or because the law didn't meet the smokefree list
criteria for enclosed non-hospitality workplaces,
restaurants, bars, and/or gambling venues to be 100% smokefree without
exemptions. Still have questions? Please contact Laura Walpert at laura.walpert@no-smoke.org
American Indian and
Alaska Native sovereign tribal laws are not reflected in these lists and maps.
But there are plenty out there! We are working with our partners to make sure
these laws are collected to eventually create a database specific to laws in
Native Communities.
The lists are updated
on a quarterly basis. The next quarterly update will be in April
2012. Please contact Holly Callahan for hard copies
of these lists at 510/841-3032 or at anr@no-smoke.org.
Only laws that are
personally reviewed and analyzed by ANR Foundation staff using standardized
criteria are included in ANR Foundation's smokefree lists. These reports, lists
and maps are made possible, in part, by a grant from Legacy.
These materials do not necessarily represent the views of Legacy, Legacy staff,
or its Board of Directors.
Please be sure to
contact us if you have questions about our lists and maps, and keep up the great
smokefree progress everyone. We look forward to adding many more smokefree laws
to our lists and maps in 2012!
