Quitlines are FREE science-based services that help people who use any form of tobacco quit and are available in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and all ten Canadian provinces. You can reach your local quitline by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW (U.S.) and 1-866-366-3667 (CANADA) or going online to your local quitline website. Visit the quitline map to get more information about services available in your area. Referring to your local quitline is easy. To help dental partners leverage quitlines, the American Dental Association (ADA) teamed up with the North American Quitline Consortium (NAQC) to develop Tobacco & Vaping Cessation - Implementing & Fostering Quitline Referrals: A Guide for Oral Health Professionals.
The toolkit offers practical guidance for oral health providers interested in connecting patients to quitline services by: • Providing rationale for the involvement of oral health professionals (Chapter 2) and guidance for collaboration to increase referrals to state quitlines(Chapter 3). • Offering suggestions for integrating the referral process into existing systems (Chapter 4) and suggested steps for oral health providers as they begin implementing referral systems (Chapter 5). Oral health providers are well-positioned to integrate tobacco cessation into routine practice, and state quitlines make an excellent partner by providing free services to help individuals quit tobacco. By integrating tobacco intervention and quitlinereferrals into dental practice, oral healthcare teams can improve their communities' health and significantly impact the fight against tobacco. There are many ways for dental professionals to engage in the quitline referral process, and we encourage you to choose a method best suited for your practice.
This is what a caller might expect when connecting to their local quitline. Additional resources for dental care teams and patients: |
